The Bikram method is a series of 26 beginner postures performed in a set sequence in a heated room for 90 minutes. Hot yoga is suitable for all ages and all levels of physical ability. Each posture stretches, strengthens, and prepares the body to work every muscle, joint, organ, tissue, gland, and cell in perfect order. The poses work synergistically and cumulatively to return the body to a balanced state. Using the tourniquet effect technique allows for the stretching, squeezing and massaging of internal organs, flushing out the cardiovascular system and stimulating the endocrine and nervous systems in order to release any deficient hormones & enzymes. Bikram scientifically designed the series to bring your body back to healthy working order, to promote weight loss, prevent illness, and limit the effects of aging. In addition, the series of postures combine skills of concentration, patience, determination, perseverance, and self-control, which lead to increased mental clarity and reduced stress.
Hot Yoga is done in a heated room to warm your muscles, prevent injury, and cleanse the body by flushing out all toxins. It provides a natural irrigation of the body through the circulatory system, with the help of the respiratory system. It brings nourishment to every cell of your body so that each one can perform its function and keep your body healthy. The heat is there to further that cleansing process. When you sweat, impurities are flushed out of the body through the skin. The 26 postures, much like the alphabet, cannot be changed in any manner, or the series simply does not work. It has been proven and experienced by millions of people that these 26 postures systematically work every part of the body, to give all all the internal organs, all the veins, all the ligaments, and all the muscles everything they need to maintain optimum health and maximum function. Each component takes care of something different in the body, and yet they all work together synergistically, contributing to the success of every other one, and extending its benefits.
As we age, our muscles get stiffer, creating more pressure on the joints. By regular stretching we can prevent this gradual stiffening and joint deterioration through a regular yoga practice. In one 3-year research project at the Tokyo University Hospital, Bikram helped doctors prove that yoga regenerates tissues and thus helps cure chronic ailments. Bikram's routine is dynamic and exhilarating. The room is intentionally warm so that your muscles become more pliable and will stretch more easily. In addition, the heat & humidity reduce the risk of injury and force circulation to all parts of your body. Your body begins to detoxify through sweating and at the same time, boosts your immune system. The series works equally well for beginners as well as advanced students.
